About Us
A note from Bryan...
When my Great-Grandfather, James Aitken opened his
wine merchant and grocers shop here in the West-End of Dundee little
did he imagine how the world of wine would change or that over 130
years later we would still be providing our customers with the same
special Aitken's service
James Aitken built his business on the solid foundations
of Quality and Service - these traditions have been maintained
by four generations.
A century of wine-buying experience has been handed down
from father to son, my own father John Aitken spent 40 years
in the business before he retured. All this practise gives
us the confidence to buy wines from every wine-making region
in the world with the aim of finding the best wines at the
best prices for our customers.
We take advantage of the speed of this electronic
age where orders may be placed in another continent and arrive
just days later. However we are positively Victorian in making
sure our customers have the advice and help they expect from
such and old established firm as Aitken's
Continually the new and the old converge. Aitkens have been
very fortunate to have visited some of the great estates in
Bordeaux; Chateau d'Yquem, Chateau Haut Brion, Chateau Margaux,
Chateau Lafite and Chateau Mouton Rothschild to name but a
few. These visits allow us to speak to growers and to discuss
the characteristics of the grape varieties and their effects
on the wine.
All knowledge is stored and put to good use when buying wine
and making informed suggestions to our customers. At the same
time we are not so stuck in convention that we fail to notice
the exciting innovations by the new breed of winemakers who
challenge the old rules and make totally palate-blowing wines.
As with winemaking, the most important factor
is getting the balance right. We pride ourselves on not only
our ability to spot trends, but also to realise the short
shelf life of "cult" wines. By listening to you.
our customer, we can discover your wine-buying needs and then
use our experience to match "your palate and your pocket"
