Bursting with fresh flavours to tantalize the tastebuds, this is a textbook old vines (Vieilles Vignes) Cru Beaujolais - an explosion of sweet brambly and reapberry fruit with a dry mid-palate core, yet brimming with expressive, soulful purity. The finish is fresh and invigorating.

In this favoured corner of Brouilly the old, short, goblet-trained vines sit on blue-purple layers of soil rich in manganese (Les Roches Bleues) on Mont Brouilly. This wine is crafted from a small parcel of vines in a single domaine near the summit of the long-extinct volcano which lends its name to the wine, Le Cru du Volcan.

Grapes are hand-picked and whole-berry fermented (carbonic maceration) for about a week, with a further 2 or 3 days on the skins to keep plenty of the aromatic young fruit but add a dash of subtle tannin, giving greater weight to the wine.

Served at room temperature or slightly cooler, this is an excellent spring and summer glass on its own or with lighter meals such as Coq au Vin.
