Farnese Fantini Sangiovese IGT, Terre di Chieti, Italy
Bottle Price: £9.49
Our current staff go-to red wine, described as being 'like Chianti used to be'.
In other words, good varietal definition - which translates as 'tastes like Sangiovese should' - and that's a characteristic of Farnese's wines.
The grapes are grown in Ortano and San Salvo, on the Adriatic coast of the Abruzzo. About 20% of the wine is matured in oak, giving depth, with the remainder matured in stainless steel to retain the maximum freshness of fruit.
It's a youthful and very appealing wine, garnet red in colour, pretty intense on the nose with vibrant red fruit - cherries and plenty of herbal characters. On the palate there's bright strawberry and more cherries, with a lovely subtle note of vanilla from the oak-aged portion of the wine. It's well-balanced, medium-bodied with firm tannins and good acidity leading to a lengthy finish.
