The map co-ordinates of the La Grola vineyard are marked on every label of this fine wine, and the vines have an average age of about 25 years. Take grapes from a single vineyard, add in an average age of 25 years, and you get character and flavour - bags of both.

For this particular vintage the weather was changeable, rain and sun alternating in September leading to ripening by virtue of sunlight rather than heat. What this delivers in the wine is finesse and elegance rather than raw power - reflected in the slightly lower level of alcohol at 13.5%.

The wine was matured in oak barrels for 16 months, with a further two months settling in tank and a final ten months in bottle before being released.

Deep ruby in colour, the 2011 La Grola has an intense bouquet - wild berries, juniper, tobacco and espresso coffee are all present. It is concentrated nd intense on the palate, yet very expressive of the terroir - it's packed with dark cherry fruit and the tannins are supple. The finish is long and lifted; it is drinking well already, but the potential to age for another decade is there.

And the blend of grapes? 80% Corvina, 10% Shiraz (Syrah), and 10% Oseleta.
