Notre Dame Des Anges Collioure 2009, Roussillon, France
RRP: £22.99
Bottle Price: £19.99
This is one of those wines that comes along every now and then, which you taste and say to yourself 'that is truly exceptional'.
The grapes for this outstanding wine are grown in some of the most scenic (and steep!)vineyards we have ever visited. Notre Dame des Anges is a joint effort between the best growers from the tiny Collioure AC, and Domaine Cazes. The wine is named for the bell tower in the fishing port of Collioure.
Each grower contributes just a couple of barrels worth of grapes to the blend, which is vinified by Emmanuel Cazes. Each bottle is individually numbered and production is limited to a comparatively tiny 13,000 bottles per vintage.
The blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan is all sourced from old bush vines, giving huge concentration to the wine.
The combination of low-yielding old vines, poor schistous soils and the fact that the vertiginous vineyards are literally eroding into the sea mean that Collioure wines are extremely rare. The profits from the wine sales are used to restore the Collioure terraces, to ensure that these top-quality vineyards are preserved for the future.
The 2009 is crimson in colour. The heady dark fruit and spice on the nose are followed by intense berry flavours and herbs on the palate, a fabulous expression of Meditteranean flavours. The tannins are ripe and taut, balancing the juicy fruit concentration, and along with the vanilla and spice complexity make a powerful wine with an extraordinarily long finish.
The wine is drinking well now but there's no doubt that like myself, it would also age gracefully. Roast red meat and game are the natural bedfellows for the wine, but Toulouse sausages or even a meaty fish in a tomato and herb sauce would be tremendous partners.
