Greywacke was created in 2009 by Kevin Judd, head winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 years and one of the winemakers responsible for the style we now know as Marlborough Sauv Blanc.

For the 2012 Pinot Noir the growing season benefited from early and mid-season rainfall. Bud burst was early and fruit set was even, and the vines remaind in great condition all the way to harvest in March.

This is one of the freshest and fruitiest Pinot Noirs we've tasted in some time, definitely fruitier in style than a Burgundy. It's a virtual compote loaded with black plums, redcurrants and brambles, with a hint of cinnamon and cloves. It is intensely perfumed with a black fruit sweetness, floral notes and a smoky edge. There's a dark fruit richness on the palate yet it's fresh and vivacious, finishing with an exotic hint of Middle Eastern spice.

This is out of the top drawer - one of the best we've tasted in quite some time.
