La Madone, La Reine de l'Arenite, Fleurie 2016, Beaujolais, France

La Madone, La Reine de l'Arenite, Fleurie 2016, Beaujolais, France

RRP: £11.49
Bottle Price: £10.99

Silky, elegant and aromatic, this Fleurie has the heady perfume of freshly pressed cherries, irises and peonies. the fleshy, luscious fruit is typically vivacious with a gentle note of red spice in its soft, serious depth.

'Arenite' is the terroir of pinky, crumbly sandstone of the La Madone vineyards, rated as one of the best in Fleurie. The east/south-east facing slopes are very steeep in places, lying below the chaple of the Madonna at the top of the hill.

The Gamay noir vines range from 40 to 90 years old and are goblet-trained with a high level of pruning concentrating flavours in the fruit.

In February 2011 Jancis Robinson wrote of this wine: 'An exceptional Beaujolais... Unusually dark. Very meaty, substantial wine that is well worth the price. No hurry to drink this. It could already deliver pleasure in a serious, concentrated sort of way but it will also continue to develop. Lovely polish and juiciness with a slight mineral undertow. Proper wine that expresses the arenite soils of Fleurie, one of the prettiest of the Cru villages in the blue Beaujolais hills, Lovely stuff.'

You get the point. In winter, match this wine with a roast leg of lamb; in summer, chill and serve with roast barbecued chicken or pork.
