The most interesting new white of the year?

Whereas they used to sell all of their fruit to the local co-operative at Lavis, today the Cesconi brothers are making some of Italy's most exciting white wines.

All of their vineyards are now farmed organically and biodynamically. Stylistically their wines are more intense and perfumed than those from Friuli and slightly lighter and fresher.

The wine is an assemblage of 40% Pinot Bianco, 30% Pinot Grigio and 30% Chardonnay. The grapes are fermented separately in oak casks, then aged in the same casks for eight months before the blend is composed.

The wine spends a further six months in bottle before release.

Light gold in colour with complex aromas of stone fruit such as apricot and peach, with charming notes of white flowers. On the palate there's a fresh, citrus character rounded out by vanilla notes from the oak ageing - never toasty or overdone, but in perfect balance. There's a nervy, mineral quality to the floral and fragrant finish - this is a white wine with bags and bags of character. A lovely drop.
